My left hip pops while doing certain exercises i.e. abs bicycle and also while sleeping on my side and I rotate to the other side. My hip locks while doing pliƩs, when on my bike and propped on my left leg or about to pedal using my left leg, then also while having sex & being on top. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know what this is an indication of?

The popping can be signs of a mild problem, but locking is worse, it means something is getting caught and there is a structural problem. Some people are born with shallow hip sockets that cause the hip to sublux, which could be the case, and you will eventually need to get an xray. If this is your problem, that much instability in the joint (allowing it to roll out of alignment and to lock) will eventually cause arthritis.
It also could be a labral tear due to an injury. The labrum in the hip is called the acetabular labrum. It kind of cushions the joint and helps to make the joint move smoothly. There is a labrum in the shoulder also, called the glenoid laburm. You can test yourself for a labral tear – I think the website I listed below will walk you through the steps. Unfortunately, it is hard to see some tears of the labrum on a MRI, even if contrast is used. There are some orthopedic doctors who can operate on a labral tear arthroscopically, but you could try injections into it first. It doesn’t sound like it is detached, which would be a more extensive surgery, but if it is torn, then that would cause the popping and it folding over in the joint would cause the locking, so it could end up detaching.
I have seen systemic arthritic conditions also cause symptoms like that – like psoriasis or other types of arthritis causing a bone spur, but I think the pain would be too much for you to even try some of the activities you are able to do if if was something like that. An abnormal structure in the joint, like a bone spur could possibly cause it to lock.
No matter what, you probably should see an orthopedic surgeron, or at least get an x ray.
I don’t really know what causes it, but when I’m wrestling on top of my bf it pops, if I’m sitting too long, or cross legged and get up it pops, certain exercises or dances it pops. Or it gets a pain in it where I actually have to find a way to pop it. Hopefully someone can answer it for the both of us!
